Marketplace Development is the end-to-end build of a multi-sided platform where supply, demand, trust, and payments all work from day one of your first real transaction. We design the three products behind every marketplace — buyer experience, seller experience, and operations console — as a single coherent loop, not three separate features bolted together.

What Marketplace Development Covers

Supply & Demand Flows

Listing creation, search and discovery, bookings or orders, and seller onboarding — designed to match how your market actually transacts. Generic templates do not convert, so we design for your specific supply-demand economics.

Payments, Commission & Disputes

Stripe Connect, PayPal Marketplaces, or regional processors wired in cleanly. Hold-and-release flows, dispute resolution, commission logic, tax compliance. Money moves correctly on day one — not after the first chargeback incident.

Trust & Operations Console

Reviews, verifications, moderation queues, and ops dashboards so your team can intervene before small problems become PR problems. Admin tooling is a first-class product, not an afterthought built in week 40.

Marketplace Analytics

Health metrics built in: supply gaps, fraud patterns, conversion cliffs, and liquidity signals. The numbers your growth team needs to run a marketplace are in the product — not scraped together from exports quarterly.

How We Work

01
Market Research
Competitors, supply and demand dynamics, unit economics, and the cold-start strategy. Before we design a product, we make sure a marketplace is the right shape for the problem — and that it can plausibly achieve liquidity.
02
Design
Three parallel flows — buyer, seller, operator — designed together. Prototypes tested with real counterparties on both sides so we catch the ‘looks good, nobody will actually do this’ problems early.
03
Build
Core transaction loop, payments, trust mechanisms, and operations tools built in parallel. Ops console is a first-class product from day one, not a CRUD panel glued on in the final sprint.
04
Launch
Private beta with a controlled supply side, concierge onboarding for the first cohort, and tight feedback loops. Go-to-market and product iterate together — the cold-start problem is a product problem, not a marketing problem.
05
Scale
Grow the healthier side first to pull the other along; improve matching, trust, and retention based on real behaviour. Everything we ship from here is measured against marketplace health, not vanity GMV.

Key Deliverables

Production Marketplace

A live platform with buyer flows, seller flows, and a functioning transaction loop — accepting real payments on launch day, not in a future milestone marked ‘payments integration’.

Payments & Commission Layer

Marketplace-grade payments with escrow, commission logic, refunds, and dispute resolution. Tax handling and regional compliance covered from the start, not bolted on before your first international buyer.

Operations Console

Moderation queues, verification tools, ops dashboards, and the support surfaces your internal team needs to keep both sides of the market trusting each other. Real tooling, not ad-hoc SQL access.

Analytics & Health Dashboards

Liquidity, match rates, supply gaps, fraud signals, and conversion cliffs — the numbers your growth team needs to operate a marketplace, visible without firing up a notebook.

Business Benefits

Transaction-Based Revenue

Commission on every trade compounds into a scalable revenue engine — a cut of every transaction for as long as the marketplace is running, not a one-time sale that you have to re-earn every quarter.

Network Effects That Compound

Each new user on one side makes the platform more valuable to the other side. Growth becomes self-reinforcing, and the moat deepens as the marketplace matures — hard for competitors to catch up.

Asset-Light Scaling

You own the platform, not the inventory. Expansion into new regions, verticals, or adjacent categories happens without the capex and logistics of holding stock or employing supply-side labour.

Trust Built Into the Product

Reviews, verifications, escrow, and moderation surfaces all designed together so users trust the platform instinctively — before they ever read a Trustpilot review.

Clean Operational Tooling

Your ops team scales linearly with the marketplace — not exponentially — because the operations console is designed for humans and the common failure modes have playbooks, not hero moments.

Data Moat

Every listing, transaction, and review is a signal you can use for matching, pricing, fraud detection, and personalisation. The longer the marketplace runs, the less a copycat can match the experience.

Our Extremely Honest FAQ

How do we solve the cold-start problem?

Depends on your market. Concierge onboarding of one side, geographic concentration, or a managed-supply approach can all work. We address cold-start in the product strategy — not leave it to the marketing team three months after launch when liquidity stalls.

Can we use an existing marketplace platform like Sharetribe?

Sometimes. Sharetribe, Arcadier, or similar boxed platforms can get you to validation faster when your differentiation is in the niche and not in the workflow. We recommend a boxed platform when it fits and a custom build when trust, pricing, or workflow is the differentiator. We show the math either way.

How long to launch a marketplace?

4–8 months for most custom marketplaces. Simpler vertical marketplaces can launch in 3; heavily regulated ones (finance, healthcare, licensed professions) take longer because trust and compliance are as much of the product as the transaction loop.

What tech stacks do you build marketplaces on?

Node.js/TypeScript or Ruby on Rails for backends; PostgreSQL with Elasticsearch or Meilisearch for search; Next.js or React on the front end. Stripe Connect is the default payments engine unless regional constraints demand otherwise. AWS or GCP for infrastructure, with observability and feature flags from day one.
